How we became private pilots in the United States. Pt.1

Prelude

When we left Russia at the end of November, 2016, we hadn’t really planned on getting a private pilot license in the US. All we really wanted to do was to exchange the grey and cold of a Moscow winter for the warm and welcoming winter of Florida, and return home by spring.

Our plan had been to spend the winter at Quest Air Soaring Center, a hang gliding airport in Groveland, a one hour drive west from Orlando. It was not the first time we had visited Quest. We had spent two months at Quest in the spring of 2016, enjoying the weather, Florida’s natural beauty, and flying hang gliders. Andrey even took part in his first ever hang gliding competition — The Green Swamp Klassic — and came in third!

The very first time I’d ever been to Quest, however, was back in 2009, also for hang gliding competitions, one of which was in my favourite format — Race and Rally. This is where pilots migrate from central Florida a thousand kilometers towards the north, every day flying along with the winds (generally from the south this time of the year), letting the weather dictate the best course to follow and task to set each morning. The retrieve drivers follow their pilots and pick up those who didn’t make it to goal (always another airfield) so they’ll be in position for the departure on the route the following morning. The tugs follow the pilots, too, heading as a group, sometimes even in formation for the fun of it, to the goal airfield after the launch window closes.

This is when I first time met Bobby Bailey, the designer of the Dragonfly and a legend in our hang gliding world.

Now and then in the Quest sky, when Bobby was home, you’d be able to watch fantastic unplanned air shows. This is Bobby at his spontaneous best; spreading his wings, taking flight, and arcing and tumbling through the sky however the spirit moves him.

Davis Straub, the founder and editor of The Oz Report, one of the most famous hang gliding sites, usually spends winters there in Florida. Hang gliding and tug “snowbird’ pilots also come down here every winter to both keep flying and to have some good times together.

Quest’s winter is warm, but still…it is not summer. In the middle of the winter, daytime temperatures average 20-22 degrees Celsius, and the night’s are about 11-13 degrees. A few times temperature dropped to zero, which in local conditions compels anyone to accept living with a heater, and to fly in winter clothes. Hang gliding cross country weather starts from the end of February, and in April there is usually one of the largest hang gliding competitions held here. If you want to learn to fly a hang glider or an airplane, you can stay here all year round.

The accommodations at Wilotree park, where Quest Air is located, is dominated by a small gathering of trailers; five or so full time residents augmented in the winter by another ten or even 15 visiting northerners. Additionally, there are several hotel-type rooms in the clubhouse which can be rented. Or, if your visit is short, you can also live in a tent. Andrey and I were very fortunate: we stayed in a small wooden house on wheels — a tiny house — which our good friend Timothy built himself, and where he invited us to stay. This had been a decisive factor in our staying in Florida for so long. By the way, there is an observation bee hive with glass walls right inside the tiny house, so you can watch the bees as long as you like! I could write a large separate blog post about the tiny house, but let’s return to the airplanes.

The official aeronautical name of the Quest’s airstrip is Sheets Airfield. This is a private grass strip airport with perpendicular runways of ~ 900 meters and ~ 500 meters long. You can take off in a small Cessna or in a similar aircraft from here, but it’s less stressful with a headwind of a few knots or so. Mostly this airfield is oriented towards hang glider pilots who are flying solo, being taught to fly, or are giving tandem rides.

It would be impossible to live right on the airfield, having planes merely a one minute walk from your home, and not want to get a pilot license. Of course, we wanted to. Furthermore, we already knew how to fly a Dragonfly. But…studying and passing exams in the US seemed to us a very difficult goal to achieve.

First of all, it is very expensive: according to our preliminary estimates, it would take about $10,000, including airplane rental, instructor fees, fuel, exams’ fees and the rest. And there are two of us! We did not have that much money, and if we had, we would probably have bought a new Moyes hang glider and would have gone to Australia for the winter.

Secondly, we would need to do it all in English. Not only would we have to communicate thoroughly with the instructor and the examiner, but also with the airport towers and other pilots in the air. Orlando’s radar service controls and directs Boeings and Airbuses to MCO, one of the busiest airports in the world.

On one hand, though I’ve become more comfortable with English over the last ten years I’ve been studying and even writing in it, I doubted if I could deal with the stress of needing to instantly understand or even express something perfectly under pressure during flight operations. Furthermore, Andrey at that time was able to only understand at best one half of the usual conversational speech of Americans. It was hard to even think of the exams and tests, and the radio communications. On the other hand, Andrey already clearly understood everything concerning aerodynamics and flight dynamics. It’s his speciality. It seems to me he would have been able to understand these topics even in Chinese. So in this sense, his talent and expertise was giving us some hope.

Despite such difficulties, we would really really want to have the possibility to walk fifty meters from our little house, jump into a plane together, and fly up to the clouds anytime we chose. We began sorting out different possibilities and combinations of airplanes, instructors and licenses. Should we study for a Private Pilot license in a Cessna or get a Sports Pilot license in a Dragonfly? On a bigger unfamiliar airport with some unfamiliar instructor or here at Quest with our dear Bobby? With the ability to tow hang gliders later or without this opportunity? With the probability of not being able to finish the course because of the money or with a little bigger chance to get a license during the same trip?

It took us two weeks to decide, which isn’t that much, actually, given the enormity of the task.
