Competitions are like life in miniature! Therefore, it is a perfect playground to really get to know people deeply.

Соревнования — это прямо-таки жизнь в миниатюре! А поэтому идеальная игровая площадка для глубокого узнавания людей.

How many years does it sometimes take to really get to know a person? After all, it is one thing to view how people behave in a calm environment, and another thing to see them under stress or exposed to danger, or given a choice between taking the morally wrong but personally beneficial path, or doing the right thing at the expense of their goals.

Сколько лет жизни иногда требуется, чтобы действительно узнать человека? Ведь одно дело, как люди ведут себя в спокойной обстановке, и другое дело, когда на человека наваливается стресс, опасность, выбор между личной выгодой и моралью, между успехом и принципами?

After all, our sport is neither an Olympic nor even a professional one. There is no importance, understandable to an outside observer, in these thousand points per day or a little medal at the end of the week (in return for an incredible amount of expended resources and efforts). However, under the pressure of competitiveness multiplied by risk, people really open up.

У нас ведь близко не олимпийский вид спорта, и даже не профессиональный. Нет никакой важности, понятной внешнему наблюдателю, в этой тысяче очков за день или медальки по итогам недели (взамен на невероятное количество затраченных ресурсов и усилий). Тем не менее, под давлением соревновательности помноженной на риск люди раскрываются.

I find this so valuable to see, to recognize “our people” among the pilots, the ones we would willingly share a foxhole with.

И это так ценно — видеть, узнавать среди них “своих”, тех, с которыми можно идти в разведку.
