Bioluminescent plankton

It was such an overwhelming contrast: Not so long ago, I was swimming naked in a soothingly warm ocean off the coast of Sri Lanka, at night, with a million stars above and plankton glowing like stars below. Twenty-four hours later, I was rushing in a taxi along Moscow’s Ring Road. Day and night. Night and day. Two so very separate worlds.

It is such a surreal thing to float in the weightlessness of salt water, surrounded by stars both above and below, and combine all this within yourself to acknowledge both the incredible beauty surrounding you and the monstrous pain from what is happening in your home country; what is being done by your country. You are trapped between the fires, and you can’t help but feel like there is no place for you anywhere anymore. It’s like the end of the world, and you’re sitting on the beach and watching it all go down. The world hurts. Your soul hurts. It’s one and the same.

I’ve never seen glowing plankton before. You move your hand under water — and hundreds of lights flare up from the movement, large as fireflies, bright as stars. Bioluminescent plankton glows in both a kind of a defense and as a reaction to irritation — that’s why the surf glows so brightly, and everything that swims and moves under water gives off such a luminous aura. I have no image to share of this moment, for I did not take my camera with me. I was content to merely be in the moment and create the memory with my sad and heavy heart. Just google “bioluminescent plankton” and you’ll see what left one part of me gasping in awe while the rest of me felt like it was sinking underwater.

I am no longer in Moscow. I only flew in and out to grab the most important papers and records for all of us, as well as to organize a temporary Moyes spare parts distribution plan for the moment. We already wildly miss flying aerobatic airplanes but we just can’t continue with our lives as they were. We need to find the next page of all of our books.
