The Russian Hang Gliding Championship of 2019 finished on August 3rd and — yay! — Andrey Solomykin became the new Russian Champion! After winning the third task, he held onto his lead until the end of the competition, and even won one more task along the way!

Третьего августа завершился Чемпионат России 2019 по дельтапланерному спорту и — та-дам — Андрей Соломыкин стал новым Чемпионом России! После выигранного третьего таска он удерживал лидерство до конца соревнований, попутно выиграв еще один с половиной таск!

His victory with a king-posted wing in the open class, especially at the Russian Open, is an unprecedented event in modern hang gliding. Considering the rather difficult weather conditions, one could say that perhaps the Moyes Gecko even had an advantage. After all, this glider was born to climb!

Победа мачтового крыла в общем зачете, да еще и на ЧР, — это беспрецедентное событие современного дельтапланеризма! Хотя, учитывая не самые простые погодные условия и сложности отхода от горы, можно сказать, что у Moyes Gecko было даже преимущество — всё-таки он здорово цепляется за потоки!

The silver and bronze medalists — Vladimir Sokolov and Sergey Lagun — also flew on Moyes wings, though these were topless. At the closing ceremony Vladimir said something like: “At first I didn’t plan to come to Russian Open at Yutsa, but rather just wait to compete at the Russian Cup later. But then I realized that if I didn’t come, I wouldn’t see all of you, and that would be too sad.«

Серебряный и бронзовый призеры — Владимир Соколов и Сергей Лагун — тоже летают на крыльях Moyes, правда, безмачтовых. А на закрытии соревнований Вова сказал примерно следующее: «Я сначала думал не приезжать на Юцу, а поехать только на Кубок России. Но потом я понял, что если я не приеду, то я вас всех не увижу, а это было бы слишком печально«.

And that was soooo true! We had such a heart warming collection of good friends. I was very glad to see everyone. The competition turned out to be very cozy. The weather, by the way, was also pretty good: rain clouds threatened sometimes but never actually affected any day’s task. Every day was flyable, though sometimes it was difficult to get away from the mountain.

И это правда, подпишусь под каждым словом. Компания подобралась очень тёплая, я была очень рада видеть каждого. Соревнования получились такие ламповые, атмосферные. Погода, кстати, тоже стояла довольно хорошая — дожди обходили стороной, летать можно было каждый день — просто иногда было сложно уйти от горы, и, по обыкновению, не каждому это удавалось.

The consistent difficulty of thermalling out of launch (only 220m high) is probably the main reason for such a small number of participants every year here. This year there were only 10 pilots participating, while over the previous five years there were from nine to nineteen people participating in competitions at Yutsa, or fourteen on average.

И в этом, наверное, основная причина такого малого количества участников (в этом году всего 10 человек, а за предыдущие пять лет, я посмотрела, в соревнованиях на Юце участвовало от 9 до 19 человек, в среднем 14).

For example, during this Russian Open, only 35% of the participants on average were able to get away from the mountain and therefore cover the minimum distance of 5 km. As a result, even tasks with 20% of the pilots making goal had the “Day quality” parameter less than 50%, and leader points less than 500. The weather conditions overall were above average but getting away from the hill (220m really isn’t a mountain) is difficult when you have only a few minutes between your belly and the landing field. One could even think that getting away is a matter of chance: either you are lucky to take off into a thermal or not.

На этом ЧР-е, к примеру, от горы в среднем улетало (а значит, и преодолевало L0 — минимальную дистанцию в 5 км) 35% участников, в результате чего даже таски с 20% финиширующих давали качество дня менее 50% и очков лидеру менее 500. То есть, погода-то на самом деле была лучше, чем 50%, даже не смотрите на Day Quality в таблицах! Но… уйти от горы сложно, когда у тебя от пуза до посадки всего 220 метров. И даже иногда кажется, что это дело случая: смог прыгнуть в поток / не смог.

But no, it was not a matter of chance! Somehow it was always the same people who were “lucky enough» to get away every time. In calm wind, one needs to feel the thermal cycles well. In a strong wind, one needs to be able to work with the broken thermal core and get to the cloudbase with it. I was VERY proud of Andrey, who was getting away from the mountain EVERY flight and even making goal twice, despite this being his very first time participating in a foot launch competition (instead of air towing). More difficult for him was that it was such a low mountain (um…hill). To me, this only magnifies his accomplishment.

Но ведь нет же, не дело случая! Улетают-то одни и те же люди В штиль надо хорошо прочувствовать термические циклы. В сильный ветер уметь зацепиться за разбитое ядро и выбраться к базе.Я ОЧЕНЬ гордилась Андрюхой, который, впервые участвуя в соревнованиях со стартом с горы (а не с аэробуксировки), да еще и с такой низкой горы, так здорово КАЖДЫЙ день улетал на маршрут (и два раза до финиша).

I had at first thought that ten more pilots would have made it better, but I eventually realized nothing at all was missing, and it fact it was perfect as it was. In addition to such a great competition in the sky, we also had the night walks along the streets of the charming Pyatigorsk city, beautiful views of the snow-white peaks of Elbrus, the heady aroma of Yutsa herbs, and the sounds of a guitar with the best hang gliding voices among a circle of good friends. Thanks to everyone who came!

Для полного фана не хватало, наверное, еще человек десять участников (эх, жаль не доехал БАЭС!) Но и так получилось здорово. А еще прогулки по очень похорошевшему ночному Пятигорску, пьянящий запах юцинского разнотравья, гитара с лучшими дельтапланерными голосами и родные лица. Спасибо всем приехавшим!
