Malibu Tour Along The South Australian Coast

My Australian summer 2013 started with the Malibu tour along the southern coast of Australia.

We’ve already been doing these Malibu Tours for the last two years. They consist of us taking our hanggliders, jumping in the car and cruising along the Australian coast, studying it, and looking for the nice flying sites. We discover new places, new beaches, the hills and mountains. We get to know new people, pilots, and motels. Getting in touch with the Australian hinterlands, Australian farmers and their dreams, Australian auto mechanics and Australian freaks (who think they are normal people, of course). We come face to face with kangaroos, koalas, and wombats. And we never know in the morning where we will sleep the next night.

Because we are moving with the wind in search of new dunes.

I really like these kind of trips. To me they seem a bit reminiscent of the movie, «Interstate 60.»

In the previous two years we studied the South-East coast: from Sydney to Portland (States of New South Wales & Victoria). The area around Melbourne was my favourite: Torguay, Kilkanda, Ocean Grove. The Great Ocean Road is a beautiful tourist route along the incredibly picturesque coast of the state of Victoria. One can see the intricately varied coast, with the «Apostles» (finger shaped rocks) sticking out of the ocean here and there. Incredibly beautiful

At that time, we really wanted to move on and fly above the endless dunes of Discovery Bay, but we were not lucky with the wind, and all we got was a nice ride in a helicopter. We were impressed and promised to come back.

And we came back! 2013 began for us in Portland, exploring Discovery Bay. And I can definitely say: it really can be really really flyable there! We got to fly there so much that we could barely move our muscles the next day. In fact, we were lucky with the weather conditions this time, and flew every day (except for two days of driving): the most important thing was to read forecasts and choose the correct coast for the given wind. We explored all the way up to Adelaide. So, next time — Eucla!

There was a lot of road of a very different kind: fashionable high-ways with the funny road signs (different signs in different states, but always intending to not let the driver fall asleep behind the wheel); narrow eucalyptus avenues with a strong pleasant smell (of eucalyptus, of course); bushy side roads with dirt shoulders, vibrantly red from so much iron in the soil, full of kangaroos waiting for cars; sand embankments, where you can drive only with a 4WD. Absolutely wonderful names of the Australian towns, which comes from the language of the natives. Did you know that, in the language of the Australian aborigines, instead of the word «big» you just need to repeat the adjective twice? Wagga Wagga, for example, is translated as a Large Well. Did you also know that there is a very long (8500 km!) fence, spanning over the entire continent, which protects the South-East of Australia from Dingoes? Did you know that the state of Victoria does not allow the importation of any fruits into its territory (in order not to import the flies as well!), and before entering into the above-mentioned state there are special urns for throwing out fruits which you couldn’t finish? There we usually meet people, carefully eating the remaining fruits because they just cannot bring themselves to throw them away. By a strange coincidence, I always meet Russians there.

Animals

Животные

Australian Marsupials always impress me with their distinctiveness. We are already somewhat used to Kangaroos (though still always glad to see them), but a wombat I saw for the first time. He was dead, however: they are often killed by cars beside the road. Wombats are funny — they look like mixture of a bear and and pig.

To my great delight I finally saw a koala in the wild. If koalas sleep 18 hours a day and never get off their trees, I never could understand why there are so many road signs that say «Caution, Koala!» It turns out that sometimes they actually climb down their tree, walk to the middle of the road and curiously look at the passing cars. Koalas don’t have natural predators (eating poisonous eucalyptus leaves, they themselves are poisonous), therefore they are afraid of nothing and look at everything with endless curiosity.

Koala
Koala at night —

Just before midnight near the city of Portland, we saw a the large ears of a koala, sitting exactly on the center of the road and looking at the light of passing by cars. I jumped out of the car and ran to save the koala (and to take a photo), while the koala confidently and, with a curious look in her face, came towards me, calmly sniffing and touching me. If at that moment our car engine hadn’t been on the verge of blowing up, I probably would still be sittting there with that Koala, so nice she was! I refuse to believe that they have a brain the size of a walnut.

Our car

Yes, our car was breaking down now and then. This car is already quite old, somewhere on the way it had 333 333 km Birthday:)! The trip was not always easy for the car. First, one pipe of the cooling system broke, then another one. Our car was losing water (sometimes with catastrophic speed), and we had to carry huge reserves of water with us. But there were always mechanics, even in the most remote sites. Mechanics, who were dreaming to be farmers. Mechanics, who were dreaming of flying hanggliders. Mechanics, who didn’t care. Mechanics, who do care. Mechanics kept fixing our car, telling us their stories, and we continued our trip.

Accommodation

10 days and 9 nights we have spent on the tour. We spent nights in different cities in various motels. My friend Nastya once asked me to take photos of the motels where we stop. Here it is!

Landscape

During those ten days, we saw so much of a diverse landscape that I wanted to find local biologists, so they could tell us about every peculiarity of this continent. This trip left a lot of questions on our minds.

At some places we met «apostles» — finger-like rocks, sticking out of the ocean. Most likely, this was once part of the continent but between them and the mainland the ground collapsed and was washed away.

Finger Rocks
Finger Rocks —

At some places the shore consisted entirely of shells. One could see that the shells were very old, but perfectly preserved. A slice of sediment shells. It is unclear to me how they managed to be so well preserved.

At some places the shore was made of completely unknown to me material, more similar to the old coral reefs. Very beautiful and strange. A sort of coral coast, steep slope. Was it ever a reef under the waterline?

Some places were made out of tons of sand, where only the 4wd jeeps could drive. Sometimes the sand dunes formed a lagoon — kind of second shore. It appears it was a reef a long time before, and then the ocean brought so much sand in that the sand dunes were formed far out in the ocaen…or is it just that the ocean receded and left some water?

Dune gooning

The dunes are amazing. They change their shape every year. One summer they are smooth and flat; next summer they are rather steep. A sort of living and breathing sediments.

And it is extremely fascinating to fly above all this.

There are lots of such parts along the coast which are not accessible by car. To get there, you would need to walk for hours. Or… A 10-15 minute flight on a Malibu will take you there! You can see it all from above: indented bays, layered rocks, coral coast, a FLOCK of kangaroos, jellyfish in the ocean, countless windmills… Surfers and kite-surfers, couples having sex in the bushes, riders on horses, fishermen, farmers, people collecting wood along the shore…

I have already written about this somewhere before, I think… These flights on the dunes are so alive and so much bird-like, which is more reminiscent of flying in dreams (for those who fly in dreams… without a hangglider!). Flying without instruments, low to the ground, you feel the flight with every cell of your body. Those who think that it is boring… are very wrong. This is intensive. One has to learn to be able to do this. To be able to take off from the one or two meter high dune, and remain in a narrow band of the lift, turn the glider, holding it for a moment on the verge of a complete stall. To be able to land vertically on the slope and to take off with a leap into the sky. To be able to fly like the albatross — diving in a gust of wind, and gliding as far as possible between the gusts. To be able to bomb out to the beach (in a cross wind!) and get your glider on the top of the dune completely alone (even on a high one, even in a very strong and gusty winds) and fly again. To be able to work in the traffic in a really narrow lift band. To be able to not give your friend (the other pilot) your dirty air. To be able to get so close to the other pilot that it would look close even on a wide angle of GoPro-camera. All the flying happens in the strong winds, when one mistake of flying with a tail wind easily causes a broken glider. So the intensity of the flying is really high and… the pleasure from the process of it is just as high! Because you learn it step by step, and get more and more fused with your wings. And with each step you feel more and more of how much you can do in the air and how much it is the real freedom!

We discovered a lot of new places. Quenched a little of our thirst of the new and the unknown. I want more. But after Forbes. Because, when we got to Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, we turned directly to the East, and rushed to Forbes and its World Chapionship through the red Australian desert (from a pleasant 27-30 degree southern coolness to the hard 46-degrees-in-the-shade of the continent). Because in addition to the thirst for new horizons we also have a huge desire for long distance cross-country flights with our Litespeeds.I think, we will come back to Adelaide, and will continue our study of the Australian coast further to the West.
