Malibu Tour to Eucla

It cannot be left untold! The sand dunes of Eucla. We (Gerolf and I) ventured out as far away as ever. Another life, which is so nice to have memories about.

Perhaps the most difficult thing in all of this is that every time you want to explore something new, it becomes harder and harder each time to reach that goal: it takes longer to get there and it occurs less frequently. On the other hand, it becomes more and more valuable…

After Forbes we continued our exploration of the Australian coastline. Despite all the reasons not to, we still did it: we went to Eucla. Eucla has always been a legend. Low steep cliff off the southern coast of Australia, straight for hundreds of miles, perfect for a record.

We had already given up on the idea of setting a record before departure. First, we did not have an FAI observer. Secondly, as it turned out, the end of January is not a record-setting time: the proper winds are rare and they don’t last long. But we really wanted to fly and explore the place, despite the fact that it is 2500 km away from Sydney. I am so glad Gerolf and I have each other and we are driven by the same madness.

Memories come one after the other… How, instead of the old green volkswagen, we unexpectedly had access to a Pajero and were suddenly loading it with our four gliders: two Litespeeds and two Malibus. And how Gerolf was driving over every off-road we found with such great pleasure. How we again crossed that red desert, directly through Hay, and how impressive the oases looked on the way. How amazing «road trains» are: trucks, consisting of three wagons; and how much turbulence those trains leave in their wake. How dingoes look. I really do not know how to tell it all as a story, it wouldn’t be possible to read. Instead, I’ll tell you the bits and pieces. The whole picture of the puzzle will not appear, but it is not necessary. The main thing is that you will want to see it all with your own eyes — and then you’ll construct your own picture from the pieces.

All these adventures were just a stronger version of our previous Malibu trip. Hard to believe, but it was even cooler than before.

Animals

Животные

These are the road signs we were finding here and there:

OZ fauna along the way - Австралийская фауна по пути
OZ fauna along the way — Австралийская фауна по пути

And believe me, it was not just the signs. We really have seen them all. Parrots of all colors and shades. Ostriches, though some were a little mangy and did not allow us to come close to them. An uncountable number of kangaroos — but they don’t surprise you any more. A variety of lizards, which we had sometimes to guide off the road where they were lying, risking their lives.

We were getting more and more spoiled with our zoo continent. Passing roadway signs indicating that we would soon meet camels, ten minutes later we were already beginning to grumble that, damn, why we still don’t see any?! And in the middle of those complaint, just by looking out the side window I saw this:

Camels next to the road -
Camels next to the road —

I am afraid to imagine how many more animals we missed during our conversation by not looking around!

Unfortunately, we didn’t take photos of dingoes, which often show up and quickly hide in the bushes of the endless Nullarbor plain. And yes, we finally drove by the famous, stretched across the continent, anti-Dingo fence.

But even cooler than the animals was…

Nature

Природа

First of all, of course, the Nullarbor Plain. It is the world’s largest monolith of limestone. For those who are not yet impressed: limestone is the material from which the unsurpassed beauty of the Alpine Dolomites are made. And Nullarbor is a much bigger piece of limestone: it is 200,000 square kilometers, and in the wider area the plain stretches 1,200 km from east to west between South Australia and Western Australia. Still not impressed? There is not one tree on the whole plain! Only bushes. It is even written on their signs:

Treeless plain -
Treeless plain —

Okay, that was just words. One look is better than thousands of words, they say. Just have a look at this impressive view:

Nullarbor Plain meets the ocean —
Nullarbor Plain meets the ocean —

The height of the plain is 64 meters above the sea level. The height of this, uhhh, «ridge». Over the ocean. Yes, this is the place for our record-breaking flights.

60+ meters high ridge - 60+ -
60+ meters high ridge — 60+ -

My first thought was, well, they fly here somehow! Looks like you need a strong wind to remain in the air with such a narrow lift band. But before that you need to take off in that strong wind, when it is not really easy to stand with the glider at the turbulent edge. Good thing, at least, that at any moment you can land on the top. For most of the way, however, the road is not so close, but at least you can avoid landing into the ocean!

I will write later about flying. Now I come back to the nature. Because the unsurpassed uniqueness of the Nullarbor Plain was almost surpassed by…

Sand dunes

When for the first time in my life I was told «let’s go fly on the dunes» I imagined some sort of desert-like sand dunes of Namibia. But no, back then the dunes turned out to be small hills, where sand, grass and bushes intermingle. Later, exploring the coast, we found dunes with even more sand. This year, with the Russian pilots we were exploring the dunes of Newcastle — and it was the biggest amount of sand I had ever seen in my life. But what we found on the way to Eucla…

First of all, it’s rather far away from the civilization, and everything around is completely wild and pristine. Roads there are not always present, often we had to drive off-road. All our wanderings were based on Google Earth maps and intuition so, once, when again we were lost between bushes on the wild coast of South Australia, we got to see this:

Gerolf on top of the Eucla dunes -
Gerolf on top of the Eucla dunes —

There was no limit to our delight.

Happy Gerolf -
Happy Gerolf —

The sand is incredibly white. Simply snow-white. So small and fine, very pleasant to touch. And it was a lot of sand. A lot of white mountains, and no roads around, and no people.

Snow-white dunes -
Snow-white dunes —

On the way to Eucla we found a few places with such dunes. One was better than the others. We almost didn’t feel like setting up the gliders: so pleasant it was just to sit there and absorb all the perfection of the world.

I was particularly struck by the story of the creation of this sand. Gerolf told me that this minute and white sand is not just some erosion of who-ever-knows-which cliffs. This is the erosion of a coral reef, and not just the typical erosion but a special one: certain kinds of fish chew on the coral, and their excrement contains the smallest grains of sand. And under the coral reefs tons of sand are formed. These tons of sand wash ashore and turn into a beauty like this:

The result of coral erosion -
The result of coral erosion —

And you’re sitting on a beautiful, carved-from-a-bone, white and elegant dunes, and you can not put into your head that all this is just the by-product of fish poop. Apparently billions of fish! I really could not wrap my head around this. I could not find any evidence supporting this theory of the origin of sand on the internet. You may believe it, or you may not.

Meanwhile sand slowly comes to the forests, mountains and villages. As it turned out, even Eucla was once located right on the coast, but the upcoming sand forced the village to move inland, higher, away from the ocean. Only an old telegraph building is left as a memory of the old village — a rare historical attraction for Australia. Once this telegraph office served as the only point of connection between East and West Australia. Moreover, the station was important as a conversion point because South Australia and Victoria used American Morse code (locally known as the Victorian alphabet) while Western Australia used the international Morse code that is familiar today. Morse-translators from one system to another used to work in our super-mega-important telegraph. And this is all that’s left of it:

Another celebrity of Eucla is the Nullarbor Nymph. This was a blonde girl, brought up by and living together with a herd of kangaroos. A Mowgli parallel, but a much sexier one! Of course, the story was made up in not-so-distant 1971 to draw people and attention to the little Eucla where, at the time, only eight people were living. The idea has survived to the present day:

And there are as many as 50 people living in Eucla now!

You may already have already started to think that Eucla is a famous tourist spot. Certainly not!

Eucla

On the way to Eucla, Gerolf warned me to not expect much of the place as there’s nothing there. Well, flying around Forbes and landing out here and there, I have seen a lot of small Australian villages. Therefore, I was not anticipating anything special but was even more underwhelmed than I thought I could be.

All Eucla is a … motel. Simple, made in-house, carefully cultivating a few trees, and even having the luxury of a swimming pool. This is one building, which contains a tiny shop, the motel’s reception and a gas station. Behind the reception building is a place with cabins for tourists and camping sites as well. Tourist passing through do not stay here any longer than a night. Therefore, our staying here for as long as three days caused surprise and curiosity, and soon we were considered to almost be local.

In Eucla it would be quite hard to find fruits — after all, the village is very close to the fruit border… Oh, those fruit borders drive me nuts! In my previous post about the Malibu trip I wrote about our crossing the New South Wales and Victoria border, where one has to throw away all fruits (so the fruit flies from one state will not appear in the other!) So, it was only beginning. This time we safely passed the border, and stopped at a store to buy fruits and vegetables. And then continued to drive towards South Australia. And at that border… yes … we also had to give away all the vegetables, fruits and berries… Again! There was already a whole agricultural control zone where all the cars were carefully checked. It all feels so ridiculous: together with the «customs officer,» we read the label on the kiwi packaging that states the kiwis are grown in the state of South Australia, in Adelaide. And then brought to Victoria to be sold. And now we could not bring them back home to eat in their home. But this is not the end yet. After all, we had to continue our way and cross the border between South and Western Australia. This time we were smart and didn’t take any fruits with us, nor vegetables, nor berries, honey, etc. Basicly, no food in the middle of desert. Ah, and also you can’t take any soil from one state to another. Therefore the sand beneath our feet, which was brought from the beaches, looked quite suspicious to the inspectors. This border control is no less stringent than the one between Russia and Kazakhstan; a full inspection, impolite manners, with the officious intensity of not only inspecting every corner of the car, but also wanting to know all about us. It felt more like they were looking for drugs, not fruit. And we had to drive through THIS particular customs for a couple times each day for the next three days. Because Eucla was on one side of the customs, and the take off was on the other side!

Besides the daily change of the state we were changing a time zone several times a day. This I have never seen before: in Eucla time zone is UTC +8.45! It is 45 minutes more than in Perth and whole Western Australia, and 1 hour and 15 minutes less than in Sydney. And this piece of non-standard time zone is just around Eucla. In order to fly, we were leaving this time zone now and then to West and South Australia. That would not matter for us at all, if for hundreds of miles around there was some other food source than dinner in the Eucla motel, which ends strictly at eight. This gave us a strong motivation to keep track of the time!

Overall we were driving a lot, and often over completely deserted places. Most of the dunes can be reached only from the beach. Often it was quite difficult to find a route to the beach and to the dunes. Our Pajero saved us a million times. The instructions in the Pajero’s owner’s manual on how to use 4WD on all the modes enjoyed unparalleled success.

We got stuck a couple of times. Once it was so serious: water was coming closer and closer to the wheels, we were deep in the mud, the car was sitting on its belly, and not one tractor was around (and even if it was, it would not had enough time to get there). We managed to escape on our own. Our gliders rescued us: we had to sacrifice two spare uprights.

On the way we met a few interesting people. A girl from England was working in the store at the gas station in a small village of two houses. There was nothing there, not even mobile phone coverage. She had worked there a couple of years already. And she likes it, apparently very much. She was educated, charismatic. And she likes to live in such remote places, «close to real life».

Even the Australians are proud of the title «Crossed the Nullarbor Plain», because there is NOTHING. Gas stations are far away from each other, with expensive petrol (even by Australian standards). There are very few places where you can eat, and you can only dream about something as simple as a McDonald’s. But she likes it there!

Expensive petrol -

I remember the town of Fowlers Bay, where after a long day we planned to eat, spend the night, refuel and go further. We already suspected something was wrong on the way there: the road which led to the town was made of dirt and was of such quality that we had to drive at a walking pace. When we arrived, we quickly found out that there is no place to eat (the only shop was closed), there is no place to refuel (while our tank read “Empty”), and there was not even a hint of a mobile connection.

In the beginning, everything seemed rather sad, but then…they gave us a very beautiful apartment in a motel, much better than a simple room. It was surprising to find such luxury in such a remote place. Nearby there was an automatic laundry — additional joy. They opened the shop for us! It turned out that the motel owner has a real sport car in the garage, and in these places they hold off-road racing contests. The modest owner said nothing about his awards, but an entire wall was packed with those. Also it turned out that exactly in this place during the Australian winter (our summer) whales come in large quantities, and give birth to calves in the bay. And there is a special observation site, where you can stand very close to the frolicking kids. It seemed like such a God-forsaken place, but it turned out there is so much in it. And the dunes, the dunes there were some of the most beautiful I have ever seen! In the end, we stayed there for three days instead of one night.

As a result, for three days we were completely cut off the outside world, so Gerolf could not answer all the greetings for his birthday, which we happily met surrounded by all this beauty.

Well, of course, none of these travels and discoveries would have been made, had there not been a major driving force behind it — a desire to fly. To spread our wings above new places, explore a new world from above. This desire drove us further. It made our heart beat stop for a moment in awe when we saw a new ideal slope. It caused us to be sad, when the weather conditions were not flyable or when my skills were not good enough to take off in difficult conditions, and I was grounded. This desire painted the traveling with bright colors, giving it more contrast, and more emotional strength. I do not see myself traveling for the sake of traveling. But the journey discovered only for the sake of flying seems to me a perfect plan.

Traveling -
Traveling —

And we flew. On the way to Eucla we were stopping on each newly discovered sandy shore, and we went flying there. And then hurried on, towards the sunset. Sand dunes spoiled us so much that we were not bothering to stop to fly at the usual rather bushy dunes. Only once during the entire trip did we made an exception and spend a day flying and taking pictures of each other at simple, grassy sand banks.

When we came to Eucla it was a huge surprise for me, that Eucla has its own famous sand dunes. You can see them in Gerolf’s little movie, which he threw together in haste. Gerolf usually produces a lot of nice footage, but does not post the video on the Internet. But this time he was so impressed with those dunes, that he wanted to share them.

Flights on sand dunes differ from flying on the usual dunes. Drifting sand changes its shape depending on the wind, and sometimes it is not parallel to the coastline, but almost perpendicular to it. Additionally, the dunes can be located some distance from the shore, which changes the conditions and makes it feel more like a flight in the mountains than our usual dune fun. What is cool is that it is easier to fly barefoot and nearly naked. And drag your foot in the sand. The lift band is not very consistent, you need to kind of jump from one hill to the next, and despite the fact that the sand hills are quite high, you need to fly very close to the ground, and always in a horizontal position — this is the only way, in conjunction with ground effect, that flights can be of the most lasting, bright and pleasant kind.

We didn’t get a chance to fly our Litespeeds over that long long coastline. We studied all the take offs, landings, strategies and tactics. But the weather conditions did not allow it. Instead, we were having fun on the dunes.

Here is a few a lot of photos:

Well, thanks for reading all this!
