Malibu Tour: Adventures in Coffin Bay

Let the sound of these roll off your tongue: Coffin Bay, Phantom Cove, Point Avoid, Seasick Bay, Morgans Landing...

Here’s a few more: Sensation Beach and Gunyah (which means an «aboriginal hut») Beach, Sudden Jerk Island and Price Island, Point Sir Isaac and Point Whitbey, Mullalong and Almonta beaches…

Picture of a XVII-XVIII century immediately comes into your mind, doesn’t it?.. Valiant British sailors and fearless pirates sailing in the Great Australian Bight and trying to ground at exactly this point of the South Australian coast. It seems, the landing was not given to them so easy!

All of these names are beaches, bays and coves of one and a very small tortuous spur on the South-West side of the Eyre Peninsula, where the Coffin Bay national park is located. Can you believe, almost each of these sites is a flying place! Yo-ho-ho! Hoist the Jolly Roger!

In January 2013, during our trip to Eucla we managed to miss Eyre Peninsula altogether and therefore Coffin Bay, too. The only place we’d visited there were the huge impressive white sand dunes of Ceduna at the North of the peninsula. Thanks to local OZ pilots we have been meeting here and there during our travels: they told us about dunes of Coffin Bay.

The specific feature of these dunes, according to the pilots’ stories and Google maps, is the presence of slopes in almost every wind direction. Even for the North wind, which blows from the continent! It was very, very tempting for us. Have a look at the map of the South Australian coast: often there are more than a hundred kilometers between the south-western and south-eastern beaches and, with the continent itself to the north, we never expected to find north facing slopes for northwinds.

It is only the lack of knowledge that makes people think that the sea breeze always blows onto the shore and one can fly every day. In reality, the wind direction and strength depend on passing high or low pressure systems, usually giving no more than three consecutive days of flyable wind. After that you can again wait for the proper wind or move to other beaches, chasing the wind, sometimes hundreds of kilometers.

Now imagine, Coffin Bay is one tiny peninsula with the slopes for all wind directions! You can literally fly every day when it is not calm. When it is calm you can swim in a bay: it is shallow and the water is warm. The place seemed to be so perfect from the description, we could even organize a public Malibu Tour here in future! We desperately needed to scout out this place.

So, 1st of January 2014, we took off from the house of Bill Moyes in Sydney in the direction of the Eyre Peninsula dunes, at the time quite yet not knowing what awaits us. And what waited for us there was an amazing pirate tale…

Ok, let me tell the story in order.

Kilkunda

Kilkunda is my favorite Australian dune spot I’ve visited since it in 2011. The landscape is unique: it is a very long beach with dunes of different height for any kind of wind or dune flying. There is a low, only one meter high dune, one you can easily walk onto and take off from; there is another higher one for low group flying and showing off; and a slightly behind that is a little hill where you can fly high and even perform some aerobatics. So, you can launch from the flat beach and make wingovers in one flight!

In Kilkunda we met a few local pilots, and flew and played together with them above the dunes and the beaches, chasing seagulls, parrots, tourists and each other, making sharp turns and jumping to the nearby beaches. This was our opening of the 2014 flying season! Hooray to the weather conditions and so luckily arrived southwesterly wind!

From Kilkunda we went straight to the famous (by my old posts) Portland with its just as famous Discovery Bay.

Portland

In Portland there was an amazing surprise and a new experience awaiting for us.

Usually in the morning we still do not know the next place we’re going to spend night, because we still have no idea what kind of dunes we’ll find along the way and whether we will fly. In the afternoon, when our plans become clearer, I then open booking.com and look for places which we can get to before the night.

This time, due to the holidays and summer season, only very expensive hotels and motels remained free, so for the first time in my life I went to airbnb.com and found a room in a big house with the owners living there for quite a reasonable price. This was going to be the first time we stayed in a room in somebody’s house instead in separate motel rooms. We were not sure if we, so finicky, would like it.

But we liked it a lot!

The hosts were awesome. Our room was decorated like a typical room in a nice cozy hotel. The bathroom was shared by all guests, but we were the only guests at that moment. The interior of the house was just… well, the word «miracle» would not even transfer our mutual delight. Thick walls of the house are made of bluestone, capable of absorbing heat in the summer and keeping out the cold in the winter. The living room was lovely, with a beautiful fireplace, large table and carved chairs. A cozy library and a billiard room were at our disposal, too. The doors opened into the garden, where koalas are often visitors, and Argentine alpacas which were brought here by the mistress of the house are permanent guests. The owners themselves were very interesting, extraordinary, with extensive travel experience and interesting stories about everything. They fed us a delicious dinner and breakfast. Of course, I dream to come back here in future.

Portland, as usual, provided us great flying weather conditions.

On the first day a South-East wind was blowing, which is ideal for flying over the Bridge Water beach. This is a very beautiful place. Dunes there are high and overgrown with bushes. Flying is reminiscent of dynamic soaring rather than dune gooning, but the rocky spurs protrude into the ocean here and there, making it moderately difficult (and therefore more interesting) to fly. Small romantic coves and bays make flights picturesque and memorable. An experienced pilot can gain quite a lot of altitude above the launch. The launch here, by the way, happens to be directly from a car park, just like it was made for lazy pilots.

On the second day the wind changed to South-West, and we flew over already so familiar Discovery Beach. The winds were strong and gusty that day. The front was coming closer and closer. It was flying on the edge of becoming too risky. Honestly, on a first version of Malibu, I would already have not been able to fly in these conditions: I would simply not have enough handling to cope with the sharp gusts of wind. Flying so low over the ground when one wing almost touches the rough and rugged slope is a challenge on itself. When the wind is very strong and ragged, it can turn you around in a split of a second and you might not have enough time to turn away from the slope which suddenly appears in front of your face. Apparently, it is doable on the second generation of Malibu. Hard to believe but you can turn this glider incredibly fast. I did not believe before I tried. Even when you don’t have speed you still can fix the most powerful bank and return the glider on its original course.

Calm enough to chew gum -
Calm enough to chew gum —

There are also disadvantages of having so much handling. «The stronger the jeep, the further to go back for the tractor», we say in Russia.

The larger the range of windwise flyable weather conditions your glider gives you, the further this range will be used. Before we used to be grounded if the wind was too strong. Now we fly. This feeling of omnipotence in handing the glider led us to explore our next weather limit in much stronger wind and gust conditions, such as when you experience not only unexpected turns and rolls but also strong vertical movements. First, you are flying at a speed of 40-50 kmph, and the next moment you’re squashed into the planet, because the air from under you has suddenly disappeared. It just hammers you into the sand. Well, maybe, Malibu3 will be able to flap its wings?

From Portland we rushed to the airport of Adelaide, where we picked up a third member of our team. Anton Struganov arrived after the Forbes competition. Finally we rushed to the South of Eyre Peninsula, to wake up there next morning and find ourselves in the world of kid’s pirate fairy tales.

Did you think all these «Seasick Bay» and «Phantom Bay» are not real historical names, but just attractions for tourists? No, they are very real, believe me. There are, by the way, also plenty of other attractions here, too.

Attractions

This is a separate subject to tell. In the town of Coffin Bay there are only six hundred inhabitants, but in summer the number of people here swells to two thousand. What are they doing in this wilderness? - we wanted to know, while trying to find shelter among completely occupied motels and private houses.

It turned out there are quite a few things to do here. The attraction that impressed me the most was something very popular (judging by the endless flyers and billboards) among visitors: cage diving with sharks. Of course, you are in the cage, and sharks are outside! Yes, tourists are put in a cage and lowered into the water. There are rather large «windows» in the cage so tourists can take photos of sharks as much as they want.

Gerolf immediately told a famous story about one rather small shark, which sped up and badly rammed the cage, squeezing half of its body into the photographer’s window. Panicking, shark started convulsing and trying to move forward. For the shark it is vital to move all the time; only then it can «breathe». Also, shark can not swim backwards. Tourists were in panic (just imagine being in their shoes!). Event organizers had to open the cage under water and free the tourists out, even though the shark was not alone there, there were its friends around. Organizers took the tourists out of the ocean as quick as they could. The cage was dismantled and the poor shark rescued, everybody survived. THAT is a lifetime adventure for those tourists, isn’t it!

No need to say that I didn’t want to swim with sharks in a cage somehow.

They say, some scenes of a famous movie «Jaws» were filmed around here and in these waters herds of huge white sharks called «killers» gather together. The only pity is that to attract tourists, locals began to lure sharks with raw meat. Still, the sharks don’t always come to lick their lips and look at tourists in a cage every time. Therefore, ads usually say something like «cage diving with sharks costs $400; if sharks don’t come - $100 refund».

Sharks make it really difficult to collect precious oysters. This bay is a unique natural place for breeding a variety of oysters. Oyster meat is worth quite a lot of money, and a lot of that meat is exported to Japan. One would think that Japanese have their own, but they consume so many oysters that Australians have to send them a huge share of the their production.

Royal oysters like to live on the edge and are extracted by highly paid divers. Why are they so highly paid? Because it is very, very risky to fight with sharks… The thing is, sharks also like to hang out on the edge; in shallow water they feel cramped somehow.

One of the local pilots, Gavin, gave me a few leftover shells left from produced oysters. I brought them to Moscow. Beauty!

As to other attractions there are also different types of surfing (kite, wind and board), walks and trips through the National Park and reserves (with ostriches as common as pigeons and kangaroos as common as rabbits), swimming with sea lions…

To be honest, because of the so colorfully-described sea creatures of local waters I somehow didn’t want so much to swim in the water despite the heat and nice beautiful sandy beaches… Still, a couple of times we went swimming in the places where it was too shallow for the sharks.

Actually, we went to Coffin Bay to fly, not to admire oysters, so let’s go back to our flying travel in such an inaccessible place for sailors.

Flying in Coffin Bay

We started flying right on the first day with joy and greed for new places and the feeling of flying. First, there was only three of us. A couple days later a fourth member of our adventure, Lukas Bader, joined our company. Meanwhile we got used to the little town of Coffin Bay, and found a new awesome location: a beautiful apartment on the bay designed in a maritime style.

How great was our flying! At first, we just could not have enough of discovering and exploring new places, swooping over all these various beaches. We were visiting a new beach each day, changing the routes, following the winds.

Seven Miles Beach oriented for north winds, looks fantastic: huge sand dunes, high and located right next to the water, without any steps of smaller dunes in between as usually happens. You can drive your car to the foot of the sand hill. Or you can sail here on a boat! Unfortunately, there wasn’t a strong enough north wind when we were there. So we just explored the place during the calm, and swam in the warm and shallow lagoon.

Most often we flew at Almonta beach. The wind favored those slopes the most. Almonta has low sandy dunes which are so easy to climb back up on when you happen to bomb out along the way while showing off. Behind the dunes there is a little kind of ridge and, if you are good, you can gain more altitude there. In the West-side of the beach the dunes turn into a rather high (fifty meters or so) rocky cliff with the tourists’ parking spot and lookout on top. There you can either show off in front of the tourists (oh, what happens to the pilots when they feel the viewfinders of tourists’ cameras looking at them!) or climb higher and hover in place to enjoy the beautiful view. Believe me, there is always something to look at!

We all know about and almost all of us have experienced the convergence of air flows. Have you ever seen a convergence of water flows? I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it: two currents flowing on the perpendicular courses and creating a visible wave of updraft. It looks fantastic! This separation of the flows right next to the shore happens due to Gold and Price islands which are perfectly visible from the ground (would be so cool to fly there!) and which are the homes for a bunch of pelicans.

Golden Island and two converging currents —
Golden Island and two converging currents —

So, imagine: the sun is going down; the sunset is full of red and orange colors; you hover over the very corner of Point Avoid; underneath there is a rocky wall with a white-yellow-pink stripe of the beach next the water; there is a white strip of foam where the south and the west water currents meet; there are islands sticking out of the ocean here and there; ahead of you there is only an endless ocean, which surrounds Antarctica somewhere far beyond the horizon…

What could be better than that? Only when, with your peripheral vision, you catch another Malibu hung frozen in admiration, carrying on board a happy face of a familiar pilot, do you stop worrying that the Gopro’s batteries ran flat long time ago and are not filming this beauty. We always feel this urge to share those beautiful moments with the whole World at least by a surrogate of photography, but it is much better to share it with another live pilot.

Gerolf’s camera got a shot —

Yes, it is more fun to travel and fly with the company of your friends, because when overwhelmed, you always want to share the feelings. So in the evening, at dinner, it would be like: «did you see THAT? and I was… and you then… we should come even closer!… and then I almost touched the pelican… yes, after that rollover I missed the slope only for a millimeter!.. Was it difficult to jump on the next beach? I did only after the third attempt…»

Yes, hang gliding is very «single» sport, when you’re in the air. Then it’s just you, and your wings, and the sky. And this is its peculiarity, and meditation, and happiness. But on the ground hang gliding becomes very company oriented and friendly, and that is also cool, isn’t it?

From Almonta we could jump over to Gunyah beach - thanks to our VGs.

VG on Malibu

The beaches are separated by pointed headlands, stretched far into the water. It is not possible to just soar around them as the wind doesn’t hold you on the sides. There is simply not enough altitude to fly above it: those spurs are wide, there isn’t any lift above, and you can’t gather enough altitude before the crossing… if you don’t have VG.

Yes, it looks ridiculous and pointless to install a VG system on a floater. So, why have we done that?

Not so many reasons, in fact, only a few additional meters of altitude.

If you take one pilot and hang him in the same weather conditions somewhere low over the dune on one of two of the same kind of Malibus with only one difference: one glider would have round uprights, round base bar and thick wires, while the other glider would have everything aerodynamic and thin (still using no VG), the «aerodynamic» glider would hang several meters higher.

The same difference would exist between two aerodynamic gliders, one of which has a VG installed and tightened.

We need this difference in order to:

A River Runs Through It — Река впадает в океан
A River Runs Through It — Река впадает в океан
Gerolf chasing Anton - Gerolf
Gerolf chasing Anton — Gerolf

This way, thanks to VG systems, we were «joining» beaches. The distance flown becomes really long, and the curve of the beach line really noticeable. if you take off in the place where the wind blows exactly onto the slope, soon in the flight you find yourself with the cross-wind, with a head or tail component. In a way it is good when you meet the head wind because you feel it right away as it becomes harder and harder to move forward. Worse is when you fly full blast a few kilometers with the tailwind not yet realizing it, then turn around and… land. Yeah, this also happens.

We also got to fly on the Sensation beach, where we didn’t find anything really sensational, except being able to drive our car to the beach and having good flying the whole day long. On Long Beach we found the shortest dune of all, though the highest and a very sandy one. We also found some nameless huge and flyable mountains of sand behind Gunyah Beach.

In fact, I can talk about beaches and slopes forever, but then I will miss

Coffin Bay National Park Fauna

Every day to get to our flying site we were entering the National park, paying for that about 8 dollars per car and then, once in the the park, where we went all depended on the wind direction. Some beaches could be easily reached by an asphalt road on an ordinary car. Others required us to drive by rugged dirt road.

The most beautiful Seven Miles Beach with high dunes located next to the water took more than an hour drive by super dirt road at a speed of 1-8 kph accompanied by violent car shaking. It was exhausting. The only cool thing in this kind of drivings is local animals jumping around along the way.

So it was a pity those animals were not very fond of being photoshooted. I had to chase them through thickets to take a photo. But it was incredibly interesting! We saw ostriches every day, it is simply their domain there. Kangaroo also jumped around here and there, sometimes very suddenly from a nearby bush.

Once we stopped at a special reserve with wild animals which could be cuddled, touched, fed and photographed. The quintessence of cuteness!

I will reveal my secret: I had to bribe those wallabies (small kangaroos) with a little piece of paper so they would allow me to hug them while being photoshooted. Yes, just a simple piece of paper! The animal’s food which is sold there to all the tourists was not so interesting to little kangaroo anymore, while the paper bag left from their usual food was met with an exuberant cheer.

I still didn’t get to see a living wombat, although it was my fifth time in Australia. This time it slept in a hole and didn’t want to go out for my camera. I saw a brown snake only one time in five years (and it was not this time), although we walk through the thickets all the time. Why do they say that everything is teeming with them here?

The roads we were driving is a story on its own… the Pajero saved us and helped us many times. Often we were traveling without any roads: over the mountains of sand or by the beach. We had to learn to distinguish «dangerous» and «non-dangerous» sands in terms of off-road driving. Many roads which lead to good dune beaches were barely passable. We would not have gotten there without 4WD.

Sometimes Lukas was taking a risk and was driving on his mini-bus on dirty roads. Sometimes we had to pull him out after that. By the way, we tested the method of pushing the bamper of the car by another’s car bamper. It does not work!

Trying to move...that...bus -
Trying to move…that…bus —

But all the difficulties worth it.

We explored new flying sites, flew more than in all of our previous Malibu tours together, learned a lot from the point of the tourist-traveler view, and worked out new team flying tricks. For example, the men had learned to perform the following circus show:

imagine a hanglider which dives to the beach from, say, 30 meters of altitude. Then it pushes out, performes a climb and turns around on the top of it. Then without any delay it dives down to the sand again. Looks like a figure 8 trajectory: «pull in, push out — turn around, pull in, push out — turn around». In our case, there were two hang gliders in one spot doing those dives synchronously under each other. To not hit each other, one glider does everything with a little delay. So, they rhythmically switch places, with dynamic rollovers at very close distances. Looks beautiful!

And then they began to do the same in a threesome. Looks mindblowing. The first starts (to dive under a second one), the second starts, the third starts. The distances are small, the delays are small, the turns are sharp. Oh, there has to be even a video of that dance on Lukas’ stationary camera!

I have to admit, we once skipped a day of a beautifully flyable weather. Voting, unanimously. We were tired. Tired to fly every day, though, can you really get tired of the beach hang gliding?

You can. When you spend every day under the hot sun without any ability to hide in a proper shadow. When continual strong wind, salt, sun and sand dry your eyes. When sand is everywhere: on your face, under your clothes, in your hair, eyes, ears, mouth, food, water; not to mention harness and helmet. When the noise of the wind and the ocean stuns you, and you get used to speaking loudly. You get tired, you want to stay at home for a day, but only if the wind blows onto a slope which has already been explored. As soon as the wind changes and starts blowing to a new dune, all complaints are instantly gone, and everyone jumps in the car.

Our Way Back

After three weeks of traveling and flying we honestly could say that… this is enough for now! Our way back home was going to be really long: 2000 km to Sydney if we drive straight through without stopping anywhere. But we decided to stop in the Melbourne area with my beloved Australian friends Rob and Zhenshi.

Rob is a president of the Victorian Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, and at the same time the HG SSO of hang gliding club «Dynasoarers». The name of this club is a funny play on words!

Both the Association and the club are presented on the Internet by wonderful web-sites with interactive maps and descriptions of all known Australian flying sites and the weather stations closeby. Awesome resources, essential for such hang gliding travelers like us.

Local pilots are also awesome and essential: they don’t just tell all the weather predictions and the best beaches of Victoria for a given day over a simple telephone call. On top of that, they come and join us, and even help with the retrieve, when necessary.

There are only a handful of people in the World, who I would really like to visit and see now and then along my lifetime. And two of them are Rob and Zhenshi. I miss you, dears.

Well, here I could say that our adventure was over. Arriving to Sydney we luckily (again!) caught good flying weather and played with our Malibus in Cronulla with Moyes pilots and our friends, Noma and Matt. It was overcast and cool day, and after a month under the Australian hot sun for the first time I did not use any sun cream.

Also, for the first time I got completely burned! By the end of the day I looked like something well done, something that only need to be packed in a suitcase and shipped home.

In Conclusion

A public Malibu tour to Coffin Bay can be and should be organized, though I still don’t know if we will do this because the trip is expensive and who knows where to find those who need this adventure as much as we did?

What is also important is by what degree pilots in a company are team players. It’s quite a long expedition, sometimes quite hard and stressful: you have to carry gliders, help each other and act on a common plan, face dangerous conditions sometimes. And if someone starts to pull a blanket over himself then the conflicts will begin. The main thing here is a properly selected team, able to always be friendly and constructive, even when the situation is difficult.

We were lucky: our little team was wonderful, the weather conditions were flyable, and the expedition was successfully conducted.

A few more photos (as if it was not enough):

P.S. In fact, although «Coffin» means coffin, which is «the box in which the body of a dead person is placed for burial», the bay was named not in honor of some coffin, but in honor of the Naval Commissioner, Sir Isaac Coffin, a friend of Matthew Flinders, who opened the place back in 1802. So, maybe nothing so wildly romantic was in those names!

P.P.S. Though, the Wikipedia says, the Eyre Peninsula coastline is littered with shipwrecks from the 19th and 20th centuries.
