Malibu Tour to Dune Du Pyla

Everyone has their own private paradise. A surfer’s fantasy consists of perfectly high waves and a beautiful sandy beach. A pile of plump snow on a steep slope can be found in a snowboarder’s paradise. A climber’s heaven has the highest mountain peaks, while a scuba diver looks for clean water with bright fish and coral reefs in his dreams.

As for the dune pilots, perfection has a specific place and name:

Dune Du Pyla

Dune of Pilat, the Great Dune of Pyla — there are a few slightly different names of this place.

Ohhh, how long I’ve been dreaming to get here…

The whole area of the Arcachon Gulf on the Atlantic coast of France looks like a fairy tale and just begs for a fully geared Malibu expedition. Just look at the map of the rest of the European coasts: they are cut up, broken, not soarable. But here… Two hundred kilometers of a straight beach line, perfectly oriented to the prevailing West wind from the Atlantic, with about a hundred different dunes with altitudes ranging from five to 100 meters! You can fly the longest dune trails, staying only meters above the ground — just like in Australia! You can stop and hover above the dunes you liked the most, one more beautiful than the other.

But, of course, first of all you would want to stop (and stay for a looong time) at the most enormous dune of the European Atlantic Coast — Dune du Pyla. Three kilometers long, 107 meters high and 500 meters wide — 60 million cubic meters of sand! Yes, of course, in Australia we’ve been to even larger sandboxes, but they were not nearly as fit for flying as this Dune.

Dune Du Pyla ~
Dune Du Pyla ~

Dune du Pyla’s slope starts right from the water line, which means the wind blowing up the hill is steady and laminar, not broken up by thermals. The slope is oriented towards the most prevailing West wind from the ocean. The surface is smooth, with no big steps and, most importantly, without intermediate dunes that so often get in the way of pilots in Australia. The slope is steep enough to launch anywhere, but flat enough to land in almost any spot, even on a hang glider! To the South of the Dune the beach turns into a soarable cliff, where you can gain a lot of altitude and fly forward into the ocean to see the oyster farms or to perform some aerobatics above the water.

The history of the dune’s origin is very interesting. Did you know, for instance, that the dune is quite young, only a couple of hundred years old? What also is interesting is that it continues to move inland a few meters per year, trampling down houses and camp sites. Even more interesting is the story of how all this sand appeared here, on the completely sand-free coast of the French and Spanish border. All those details can be found on the official website of the Great Dune of Pilat. I better tell you about our flying there.

Andrey and I arrived at Dune Du Pyla in October’14, when in Moscow the cold autumn was already in full swing. The trip to the dune is really long, but … we really wanted to get there! On the way we got to fly in the Dolomites (which seems to have gathered all the European paraglider pilots + a bunch of visitors from other continents) and Bassano (where we’ve met all the rest of the pilots who did not go to the Dolomites due its overcrowdedness), had bathed in the Mediterranean Sea on the Monaco’s coast (and that is in October!), had dinner in Nice, so beautiful with its night lights, went for a really cool karting session somewhere around St. Tropez and finally watched the sunrise on the Atlantic Ocean. Although later we found that the sunsets look much more impressive there… Yes, the picture of sun sinking into the ocean at the west coast of France is absolutely inexpressible.

Aaaand in between the dawn and dusk… we were flying! The weather conditions were not perfect, the wind was weak, but it was good for us. Why is that? Because no one except us could really fly!

On the way to the dune we were a little worried we’d meet crowds of paragliders on the launch, judging by the photos and videos on the Internet, where our spineless friends totally occupy the entire beautiful slope. We were reassured that paragliders prefer the lower part of the slope where it is steeper because there the lift band is high enough for their canopies. We had planned to fly higher along the slope, where it is more flat, but it turned out we didn’t need to. There were really a lot of paraglider pilots but the majority of them were sitting at the bottom and waiting for the weather conditions to get better. Sometimes individual pilots, looking at us having fun, were trying their luck and making little flights, but there was clearly not enough lift for their high wings. So they were waiting and waiting and only in the moments of the strongest wind they flew, not over the Great Dune, which was too flat for them in this kind of wind, but to the left (South) of us, where the beach turned into a steeper soarable cliff.

This is why the whole magic Dune was at our disposal! And we made sure we made full use of this chance!

Andrey tried dune flying for the first time in his life. All those launches and landings to any spot of the slope! All those low-passes, turns with the tip touching the ground, drawing long lines in the sand by bare feet… It is both a game and a constant control of the wing in all its modes, both fun and learning of your own limits and the limits of your wing.

As for me, I had a great relief, soaring the dune, as I missed this kind of flying and this feeling of unity with the wing. I was playing, jumping, frolicing, allowing myself more than ever before — thanks to the soft conditions that favored our craziness.

It’s a pity that, in hang gliding, we don’t have yet any freestyle events such as the famous paragliding Wagas festival. That is a real celebration! I don’t know how to describe it in one word… Acro above the sand? Well, it is not really an acro competition but mostly acro pilots take part in it. It’s the ultimate competition of «waga» flying — the purely freestyle art of canopy control. It’s all about tricks such as helicopter landings, death spirals, advanced ground handling, barefoot surfing, and many more. For the unaware, a Waga is where you go swooping down the dune, trying to touch your wingtip, and your body on the sand at the same time, then continue flying off and into the next Waga. Something like this:

The art of wing control on small altitudes excites and inspires me. Maybe one day we will organize Waga festival among hang glider pilots?

For now, we were engaged in full swing Waga practicing! It was amusing to see how the VG on our Malibu changes the game. At first, I was flying without pulling VG on, as I was easily gaining enough altitude needed for maneuvering and playing. Andrey is twelve kilograms heavier than me, and he could not get higher than the launch. Until he pulled the VG on! Then he began to soar even higher than me. That’s how easy it is to convert non-flying day into a flying one!

At the end of the day two local pilots with a floater hang glider came to the place we had chosen for take offs and landings (and jumps, and joggings). We had already seen hang glider wings flitting among our spineless brothers soaring a distant cliff, but they didn’t fly towards us. One hang glider, though, flew to the Great Dune but didn’t manage to keep enough altitude and landed shortly after that. Perhaps, we were having fun so appetizing that the guys could not stand it and walked out to us, carrying their wing on their shoulders. The pilot didn’t manage to soar up the hill in the narrow and weak lift band, and just flew down to the beach. Probably, he was a student, or the hang glider makes all the difference. Or the VG!

Meanwhile we got a chance to talk to his friend, a pilot of local hang glider school, who gave us a lot of useful tips about flying on the dune and closeby. He told us about restricted areas where you can not fly, and about interesting places where you can launch. I wrote down the address of the hang gliding school (on the sand, of course, where else?).

Write to them if you decide to visit the Great Dune. The guys are very friendly, ready to share and to help.

It is, in fact, very simple to come and fly here. Dune du Pyla is 12 kilometers away from the small town of Arcachon and 60 kilometers from Bordeaux.

The most important moment for hang glider pilots is how to drive as close as possible up to the hill (yes, to not carry the gliders for too long). Several campgrounds occupy all the entrances to the Dune. In the Northern part of the Dune there is a parking for tourists and a very long pedestrian stairs to the top of the sand mountain.

But this is not our choice. We need to go to the campsite called “Pyla camping”, which is located in the Southern part of the Dune. You can stay at this camp! But if you don’t, you just need to buy a one-time «guest» pass for, I think, 5 euro per person, to get to that area. You will be given a map along with the pass, so you can navigate to the side of the Dune and drive straight to the launch.

You can fly any type of hang glider on this huge dune. Both floater and topless wing can bring you a great time here. Different kind of fun, of course, but in any case, a great one.

And before leaving you can fly down to the beach and swim in the salty ocean, enjoy the sunset and visit a wonderful restaurant in Arcachon with amazingly delicious sea food…

We will definitely go back to Dune De Pyla one day. Do you want to join?
