We really liked Thailand. And we hadn’t expected that at all — after Sri Lanka we were a little afraid of Asia altogether, to be honest. But then we came to Thailand and almost immediately gave a huge sigh of relief. We were so happy with what we found there.

Таиланд нам очень понравился. Сами не ожидали — после Шри-Ланки побаивались Азии, если честно. А тут приехали и — выдохнули. И прям пропёрлись.

In Thailand we managed to spend a lot of time in Hua Hin city and Koh Phangan island, as well as visit Khao Sok National Park and Koh Samui island for a short time.

Мы успели пожить в Хуахине и на острове Панган, а также побывать недолго в национальном парке Као Сок и на острове Самуи.

Here is what we liked about this country:

Что понравилось:

• Most importantly, it is very beautiful everywhere there. A lot of magnificent nature.

• Самое главное — очень красиво. Очень очень много потрясающе красивой природы.

• It is clean. Cleaner than Sri Lanka by a magnitude of ten and, perhaps, cleaner than the rural parts of Russia, on average.

• Чисто. Чище чем в Шри-Ланке просто на десять порядков, да и, пожалуй, чище, чем в среднем в замкадовской России.

• It’s often inexpensive. In the Thai city Hua Hin, we lived in a nice apartment hotel for $350 a month. In one of the Thai islands Koh Phangan we lived with friends in a two-family house for $200 per family per month — it was a rather basic accommodation, nothing fancy, but with a kitchen and A/C, and within a 10-15 minute scooter ride to almost any cool beach, restaurant, kite spot, etc. Scooter rental was only $100 per month.

• Недорого. В Хуахине мы жили в апарт-отеле за 350 долларов в месяц, а на Пангане мы жили с друзьями в доме на две семьи по 200 долларов с семьи в месяц. Это было очень простое жилище, не что-то пантовое, но с кухней и кондиционерами, и в пределах 10-15 минут езды на скутере практически до любого клевого пляжа, ресторана, кайтерного места и т.п. Аренда скутера — 100 долларов в месяц.

• The proximity of nature. Elephant hugs. Waterfalls. Caves. Kite spots. Nature scenes that felt like they were from the «Avatar» movie.

• Близость природы. Обнимашки со слонами. Водопады. Пещеры. Кайт-споты. Природа как из фильма “Аватар”.

• Fast Internet, easy to work online remotely.

• Достаточно быстрый интернет.

• Access to both familiar and unusual, but tasty food.

• доступ к привычной и к непривычной, но вкусной еде.

• And once again gorgeous nature. So much so that it becomes clear how people just give up their ambitions and just stay there for years.

• И еще раз очень красиво. Так, что становится даже понятно, как люди отказываются от амбиций и просто остаются там жить.

What we did not like:

• Difficulty with long-term visas (on the other hand, it is simple to get short-term visas).

• Сложность с долгосрочными визами (простота с краткосрочными визами зато).

• Really complex validation of FAA pilot licenses (it takes at least four months, with subsequent linking to a specific aircraft registration number).

• Сложная валидация американских пилотских лицензий (от 4 месяцев с последующей привязкой к конкретному регистрационному номеру самолета).

• Еhe Thai habit of attaching their native language’s feminine identifier “-kaa” to so many English words as well. The unsettling thing for us is that their intonation of «kaa» sounds a little like disapproval to a Russian ear, as if they always aren’t happy with what you’re doing. This drove Andrey nuts!

• Окончание “-каа” у каждого слова drove Andrey nuts!
