In one 18-minute flight Andrey collected three medals: gold, silver and bronze. And this was his first aerobatic competition! More details to follow.

За один 18-ти минутный полет Андрюха собрал три медали: золото, серебро и бронзу. И это его первые пилотажные соревнования! Но обо всём по порядку.

On August 28-30, at the Drakino airfield near Serpukhov, the Moscow Region Open Aerobatics Championship was held. Open means that other regions could also participate, which made the competition very large by aerobatic competition standards: 32 participants in five categories (in order of increasing difficulty: the Third League, Second League, Yak-52, Advanced and Unlimited categories).

28-30 августа на аэродроме Дракино рядом с Серпуховым проходил Открытый Чемпионат Московской области по пилотажу на самолетах. Открытый — значит, что участвовать могли и другие регионы, что сделало соревнования очень крупными по самолётным меркам: 32 участника в пяти зачётах (по возрастанию сложности: Третья лига, Вторая лига, класс Як-52, класс с ограничениями Advanced и класс без ограничений Unlimited).

Pilots flew two flight programs within each category. The 3rd and the 2nd leagues flew both programs in one flight, although this is regarded to be more difficult for pilots as opposed to flying one program in one flight. The weather was bad and thus the organizers tried to give everyone a chance to compete. And they succeeded with it!

Каждая лига летала по два комплекса, то есть по два задания, причем 3-я и 2-я лиги летали оба комплекса в одном полёте. Пилотам это сложнее, чем летать каждый комплекс в отдельном полёте, но погода была плохая и тем самым организаторы пытались дать шанс всем успеть отлетать. И у них в итоге получилось — все всё успели!

A funny difference between airplane competitions and, for example, hang gliding competitions, is that for each of the two individual flight programs within each category, there is its own set of medals. For example, the Yak-52 category has two different sequences to perform, each earning its own Сhampion, then the points are combined to determine the combined Yak-52 Сhampion, known as the Overall Champion of the competition. Because there are five categories, there will be five Overall Champions.

Забавное отличие самолётных соревнований от, например, дельтапланерных — это то, что за каждый отдельный комплекс разыгрывается свой набор медалей. То есть, в каждой отдельной лиге за каждый отдельный полёт появляется свой Чемпион! А потом результаты комплексов суммируются, и вычисляется лучший пилот в многоборье — Абсолютный Чемпион соревнований. Вернее, пять Абсолютных чемпионов, потому что зачетов пять.

Why don’t we do that in hang gliding? We fly for five hours every day for several days in a row (sometimes even a week!), And then only one pilot gets the title of the Champion.

Вот почему у нас не так в дельтапланеризме?! Летаешь по пять часов ежедневно несколько дней подряд (иногда даже неделю!), а потом только один пилот гордо зовётся Чемпионом.

So, in the Open Aerobatics Championship of the Moscow Region, Andrey won the gold medal in the first flight program, the bronze medal in the second flight program, and the silver medal overall in the Third League. He collected all the colors of the medals. An excellent aerobatic-competitive debut after all, isn’t it?

На этих соревнованиях Андрей стал золотым призером в первом комплексе, бронзовым призером во втором комплексе, и серебряным призером в многоборье в третьей лиге. Все цвета медалей собрал, в общем. Отличный пилотажно-соревновательный дебют, да же ведь?

I wanted to write here about some of Andrey’s ups and downs on the way to his victory, but this is turning into too much of a longread, so I will write about those adventures in the next entry!
